{"id":4450,"date":"2016-05-12T14:42:06","date_gmt":"2016-05-12T18:42:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/blog\/?p=4450"},"modified":"2022-04-06T15:05:01","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T19:05:01","slug":"momentum-trade-mxl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/momentum-trade-mxl\/","title":{"rendered":"How We Scored A Solid Gain Trading Maxlinear In A Weak Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_4453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4453\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4453\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/mxl-maxlinear-300x103.png\" alt=\"Ticker $MXL\" width=\"300\" height=\"103\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/mxl-maxlinear-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/mxl-maxlinear-110x38.png 110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ticker $MXL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the S&amp;P 500 nearly unchanged since\u00a0it started the year and the NASDAQ Composite down about 6% year-to-date, 2016 has <em>not<\/em> been shaping up to be a good one for <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mint.com\/investing\/why-stocks-are-a-risky-long-term-investment-1212\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;buy and hold&#8221;<\/a> investors.<\/p>\n<p>However, for savvy swing traders who have been sticking to their trading strategies, there has still been a steady flow of <strong>profitable momentum trading opportunities<\/strong>\u00a0in stocks showing relative strength to the broad market&#8230;if you know how to find them.<\/p>\n<p>One such example is our recent short-term swing trade entry into semiconductor stock Maxlinear ($MXL), which netted an average price gain of <em>roughly 9%<\/em> with a holding period of just a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Invest just a few minutes of your time to continue reading and we will clearly\u00a0show you how we did it with an <strong>educational, technical walk-through<\/strong> of the trade that we recently profited from in the model portfolio of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/services\/swing-trade-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wagner Daily<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Stalk Your Prey, Then Wait<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With a strong relative strength ranking and impressive earnings\/revenue growth over the past several quarters, $MXL has been one of the\u00a0&#8220;must own&#8221; stocks for our style of trading, which can be described as intermediate-term trend following.<\/p>\n<p>But even the best stock pick needs to be entered with the correct timing, and that time presented itself to us back on February 22.<\/p>\n<p>That day,\u00a0$MXL broke out\u00a0above multi-month\u00a0resistance of its 50-day moving average on heavier than average volume, which was the last condition needed to generate our<em>\u00a0buy signal<\/em> in this stock. Here&#8217;s what the daily chart looked like at the time:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/\/~rick\/\/charts\/2014\/160414MXL.png\" alt=\"$MXL 1 \" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Rather than chasing the price action after the 5% gain of February 22, we patiently waited for a short-term pullback to new support of the breakout level.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, we didn&#8217;t need to wait long, as a pullback to the $15 breakout area came just one day later (February 23).<\/p>\n<p>The pullback created a buying opportunity because there\u00a0was a ton of new support from the rising 10 and 20-day moving averages, as well as the downtrend line of the consolidation.<\/p>\n<p>The 50-day moving average\u00a0was also near $15 and beginning to flatten out from its previous decline, which was in place\u00a0during the prior consolidation phase\u00a0of $MXL.<\/p>\n<p>So given all the support around the $15 area, along with higher than average volume on the breakout above the 50-day moving average, we felt<strong> $MXL offered a rather low-risk entry point<\/strong> on the next day&#8217;s open.<\/p>\n<p>As such, members\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/services\/swing-trade-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our stock picking newsletter<\/a>\u00a0were alerted to a buy entry on the evening of February 23.<\/p>\n<p>$MXL triggered our buy entry on the next day&#8217;s open.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows the price action on the day of our buy entry at $14.97:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/\/~rick\/\/charts\/2014\/160414MXL22.png\" alt=\"$MXL 2\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>With our entry in the money right away, we added to the position on February 29, as the price cleared the prior day&#8217;s open just above $16:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/\/~rick\/\/charts\/2014\/160414MXL2.png\" alt=\"$MXL 3 \" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>On March 7, we sold the shares that were added\u00a0on February 29 to lock in some gains because market conditions still were not ideal.<\/p>\n<p>We also kept in mind that we could always\u00a0buy back the shares we sold&#8230;possibly at a lower price on a pullback.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows our first exit in $MXL, which netted an<strong> 8% price gain in just over one week:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/\/~rick\/\/charts\/2014\/160414MXL4.png\" alt=\"$MXL 4 \" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>We recently sold the remaining shares of $MXL on May 4,<strong> scoring a gain of 10%<\/strong> based on our $16.55 exit in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/services\/swing-trade-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our swing trading report<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We sold due to the heavy volume breakdown below the 50-day MA that occurred on April 19, as well as due to a lack of profit buffer heading into May 9 earnings report.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, <em>if\u00a0<\/em>$MXL would have held the 50-day moving average and cleared resistance at $19, then we would\u00a0have held the position through the earnings report because there would have been a substantial profit buffer in the event of unfavorable\u00a0earnings surprise.<\/p>\n<p><em>What thoughts do you have about this trade?
